Looking on Twitter/X today, there is abject hysteria over the recent US Supreme Court decision not granting, but confirming, presidential immunity for official acts.
SCOTUS didn’t create or grant immunity. It was always there.
Otherwise George W Bush would be prosecuted over the tens of thousands of deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan. Or Bill Clinton for bombing an aspirin factory. Or Barack Obama for ordering lethal drone strikes on civilians. Or Joe Biden by pushing Ukraine into war, killing half a million Ukrainians.
What SCOTUS did was affirm already existing presidential immunity. This was in response to unprecedented lawfare directed at Donald Trump, challenging official acts that Democrats didn’t like.
As the Chief Executive, Trump is responsible for ensuring and peaceful transition of power. That includes verifying election integrity. There are constitutional mechanisms for this, involving the VP, and Trump discussing such matters is part of his official duties.
Trump as President had ultimate declassification authority. Having classified docs under secure secret service protection is well within his official duties.
Biden and his DOJ lawfare challenged this, hence the need for SCOTUS clarifying presidential immunity.
They didn’t grant anything, only affirmed. Democracy is not ending, although the left are acting as such in a hair-on-fire manner (as in AOC calling for SCOTUS impeachments).
Call the left out on this nonsensical gaslighting. Ratio their tweets. Community notes. Time for pushback!
