As a NZer it's curious that you'd say that there is a heavy Maori/Indigenous influence. This is the case in touristy traps but NZ is only about 14% people that 'identify' as Maori. We are far more multicultural than the tourism ads portray. NZ is not really open for business though. Small business in the towns have been decimated by covid lockdowns which is force changing the landscape to the sterile mall culture of big business - you can get this anywhere in Asia or The States if you want. Real kiwi culture is fading.

On my bucket list, although I definitely won't be building a prepper getaway there after seeing Jacindas covid tyranny.
